Authentication bypass

MFT appliances have repeatedly shipped authentication bypasses: unauthenticated API or servlet endpoints, flawed session or token handling, and logic errors that let an attacker create or assume an administrative account. Bypassing authentication exposes file access and administrative functions, which on their own leak data and often chain into full remote code execution.

A recurring MFT weakness is reaching protected functionality without valid credentials. The forms vary: an API or servlet endpoint that performs sensitive actions without an auth check, session or token handling that can be forged or replayed, and logic flaws that let an unauthenticated request create an administrator or assume an existing one. Because MFT portals front both file access and administration, a bypass immediately exposes partner data and admin controls, and the admin surface then frequently chains into code execution.

bash
# probe for unauthenticated access to admin/API endpoints (product-specific paths)
curl -sk https://<target>/api/v1/... # does a sensitive API answer without auth?
curl -sk https://<target>/<admin-servlet> # admin function reachable unauthenticated?
# account-creation/assume bypass: craft the request the flaw permits, then use the session
curl -sk -X POST https://<target>/<endpoint> -d '<crafted body>' -i # creates/assumes admin

Exploitation notes#

  • The appliance and version determine the exact endpoint and request; fingerprint first, then target the known bypass for that build. Many are fully unauthenticated, so reachability is the only precondition.
  • An admin-account-creation or assume bypass is the strongest, it hands the full administrative portal, from which file access and the injection/RCE paths follow.
  • Even a non-admin bypass that only reaches file-listing or download endpoints is significant for MFT, because the whole point of the appliance is the sensitive files it holds.
  • Chain into Injection to RCE: admin access often exposes the configuration or feature where an injection flaw gives code execution; see the specific campaigns.
