Entry-level certifications form the foundational tier of security credentialing. They confirm that a person understands core concepts across a broad range of security topics without requiring deep specialization or extensive professional experience. Many candidates earn one while still studying or while transitioning from an adjacent discipline.

What this tier validates#

These credentials signal breadth and readiness rather than mastery. Earning one tells an employer that a candidate has studied a recognized body of material to a known standard and can be trusted with foundational responsibilities under supervision. They do not, on their own, demonstrate the depth needed for independent technical work in a specialty. The tier answers whether someone is prepared to begin, not whether they have already arrived.

Common credentials#

  • CompTIA Security+ is the most widely recognized, covering a wide survey of security principles, risk, cryptography, network defense, and operations.
  • CompTIA Network+ and A+ often precede it, grounding a candidate in the networking and systems knowledge that security builds upon.
  • The (ISC)2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) offers a vendor-neutral starting point aimed squarely at newcomers.
  • GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC) extends the baseline with a more hands-on emphasis.

These are representative examples, not a required sequence, and the right choice depends on your background and goals.

Who it suits#

This tier fits people early in a security career: recent graduates, career changers from IT support or system administration, and students who want a credential to accompany their studies. It also serves professionals in neighboring fields, such as help desk technicians or network administrators, who want to formalize security knowledge they have absorbed informally. These credentials are most meaningful when paired with practical exposure through labs, home environments, or early job experience, and for many they are the first visible marker on a path toward the intermediate tier.
