Privacy and data protection roles exist to help an organization collect, use, and retain personal data responsibly, in keeping with applicable law and the reasonable expectations of the people that data describes. They sit at the intersection of law, engineering, risk management, and operations, and their shared value is translating broad legal obligations, such as those in the GDPR or comparable regimes, into concrete controls, decisions, and habits that hold up in daily practice.

What these roles share#

  • A focus on personal data: knowing what is held, why, and who can reach it.
  • The task of turning legal and ethical obligations into controls people can actually follow.
  • Close collaboration across legal, security, product, and governance functions.
  • Entry from varied backgrounds, with practitioners often moving between advisory, technical, and program work over a career.

Roles#

  • Data Protection Officer: holds an independent oversight and advisory mandate, monitoring compliance and serving as the point of contact for regulators and individuals.
  • Privacy Analyst: conducts assessments, maintains records of processing, and reviews how data flows through systems and vendors.
  • Privacy Program Manager: organizes privacy activities into a coherent program, coordinating stakeholders and keeping policies, training, and reporting on schedule.
  • Privacy Engineer: embeds privacy into the design of systems and products through techniques such as data minimization, de-identification, and access control.
  • Privacy Counsel: provides legal interpretation and judgment on regulatory requirements, contracts, and emerging obligations.
