Shell control operators let an injected value end the intended command and begin another. A semicolon runs commands sequentially; && and || run them conditionally on the previous command's success or failure (a useful boolean oracle); and a trailing & runs a job in the background. Whenever the application invokes a shell, any of these turns one injectable parameter into arbitrary command execution.

Pages#

  • Background execution (&): Using & to detach an injected command so it runs asynchronously, keeping the response fast while a payload executes, and the Windows cmd.exe meaning of & as...
  • Conditional execution (&& and ||): Using the AND (&&) and OR (||) shell operators to run commands on success or failure and to build a boolean exfiltration oracle in blind OS command injection.
  • Sequential execution (;): Using ; to append commands that run unconditionally after an injected value reaches a shell, the simplest OS command injection primitive.

Tools#

  • commix: automated command-injection detection and exploitation.
  • Burp Suite: Repeater and Intruder for separator injection.
